For King & Country: New Zealand’s First World War on Film

We recently received considerable support from Lottery WW1, Environment & Heritage Committee to curate For King & Country: New Zealand's First World War on Film. Excerpts from 38 films and a variety of still images tell New Zealand's experience of the First World War, voiced by renowned historian Dr Chris Pugsley, ONZM. We have commissioned a contemporary soundtrack by Iain Gordon of Fat Freddy's Drop to accompany the programme.

The film includes significant historical recordings from Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision's collection. The project also involved a massive research effort between other archives in New Zealand, as well as major collections in Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Because of the generous support that we received, the resulting 70-minute compilation of films is available free of charge for groups (like schools and community groups) to loan in order to host their own screening. Learn more about the compilation or request to loan it.
