War Fare

With sons and fathers sailing off to fight on the other side of the world, those on the home front could see what was happening for the first time. They could go to the pictures.

The government commissioned Pathe Freres to cover the NZ Expeditionary Force in Europe for local viewing. Theatre managers were quick with promotion “Armies of Europe – graphically portraying the present day war in all its reality and horrors. Direct from the front. Prices as usual.”

Cameraman Charlie Barton was later dispatched to get the New Zealand perspective, but he arrived too late. The war had ended.
