Talking the Talk
On 3 January 1930, the first New Zealand talkie was heard. It was the inventive Ted Coubray's, Coubray-tone News.
Overseas film companies were determined to keep the secret of how their stars could talk, but Coubray devised his own system. With only sketchy information he succeeded in using the same negative emulsion for picture and sound. But his triumph was short lived.
The system was tested by Alexander Markey in the making of Hei Tiki and Coubray left the set after a bitter disagreement. The film was completed without sound and Markey sold the equipment.
