100 Years in Fifty Minutes

Dedicated to “New Zealand Pioneers,” 100 Crowded Years galloped through New Zealand's history as seen by its European settlers in a record fifty minutes.

It was made by the Government Film Studios as a propaganda piece for the Tourist and Publicity Department. Re-enactments of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, the New Zealand wars and the discovery of gold jostled with the benefits of refrigeration and state housing.

“Our next centennial film,” one critic wistfully noted at the time, “is bound to be a lot better.”
