Light Magic

Entertainments projecting brightly coloured images enthralled young and old alike. From the mid-19th century, magic lantern shows became the rage – magic indeed.

From these early slide shows we can see how close the invention of cinema was. Illuminated by a lamp and magnified, the large glass slides created a wonderful world of glowing colour. By dissolving and superimposing images from up to six lanterns, simple animation could be achieved.

Often shown with music and stage recitals, these were truly multimedia productions.
