"Nothing could stop the men, the Mini, the madness," claimed the poster.
Certainly nothing could stop the crowds pouring into theatres for Geoff Murphy's Goodbye Pork Pie (1981), a real New Zealand hit.
A brief production boom took off as investors found significant tax benefits if they backed New Zealand movies. The loopholes were soon closed, however, and ready investment had dried up by the mid-1980s.
Many of the films from this time struggled to find audiences but there were some modest successes and a genuine hit. Footrot Flats (1986), an animated cartoon feature, broke all attendance records and brought in more than $7 million in Australasia.
