Close Ups on NZ Film History

Cut Short

Film maker Peter Wells calls them “the quintessential later twentieth-century art form”. Music videos, promotional films, commercials, documentaries – any short film or video.

Before television the main part played by short films was as the lead-up to the main feature. Now they have become a feature in their own right, often putting forward odd and unusual points of view. By 1985 there were 142 production houses in New Zealand making short films of all kinds.

The Arts Council funded short experimental film from 1972 and the Film Commission from 1986. Television too has been an important outlet.
