Gaylene Preston

“If we don't make New Zealand movies,” director Gaylene Preston once sagely remarked, “no one else will.”

Determined to make her films in and about New Zealand, Preston has taken on stories others have ignored.

She began using film in art and drama therapy programmes in Britain but by the mid-70s she was back working in New Zealand. She directed some short films in the early 1980s and then her first feature Mr Wrong (1985). This thriller was followed by other films examining the experiences of women: Ruby and Rata (1990), Bread and Roses (1993), War Stories (1995) and Perfect Strangers (2003).
