Lawrie Inkster, 1897-1955

Lawrie Inkster, a photographer from Greymouth, began making films in his spare time during the early 1920s. He was assisted by his wife Hilda who carried equipment, helped with processing and created intertitles.

In addition to recording local events for screening to large audiences in theatres around the West Coast district, Inkster also filmed a series of delightful home movies which reveal his quirky sense of humour.

After the introduction of talkie films, the demand for silent films waned and Inkster scaled down his public filming activities, concentrating instead on building up his photographic business and making 16mm home movies.
