NEW CONTRACT, NEW PROGAMMES, HIGH USAGE OF FILM ARCHIVE PROGRAMMES

The Film Archive and The Ministry of Education have signed a long term contract for Secondary School provision which will greatly enhance the use of film and television source material across the secondary curriculum. ON DISK, a new secondary school disk loan library was released by the Hon Steve Maharey on August 16 2006. ON DISK has returned usage numbers well in excess of its first year target, more than doubling its required level within 9 months. The growth of on line features on our Education pages are also major features of the new contract.

As a national institution we have also continued our popular screening programme for primary and secondary visiting groups at the Film Archive mediaplex in Wellington.

The On Disk Secondary Schools Library 2007/2008

During 2006 the Film Archive completely overhauled its existing ON TAPE library as part of a shift to digital format. 32 titles from the original ON TAPE menu were chosen for transfer to multi-chaptered, multi-menu-ed DVD packages. While the original 32 titles on video had a total duration of 26 hours, the newly formatted DVD library expanded to 75 hours, with many titles requiring more than one disk to accommodate new footage.

Eight new ON DISK titles have been constructed for 2007 release taking the total title menu to 40. These new titles can be found in more detail on their curriculum pages. They are as follows:

New English/Media Studies Titles:

  • New Zealand Writers
  • New Zealand Poets
  • New Zealand Director Studies: Niki Caro
  • New Zealand Director Studies: Peter Jackson
  • Genre Studies: Documentary

New History Title:

  • New Zealand in the 19th Century

New Geography Title:

  • Urban Settlements: Auckland

New Art/Art History Title:

  • New Zealand Sculptors

Coupled with the new disk library are extra components appearing on our Education web pages. The package available with each ON DISK title will include online teacher’s booklet, and in many cases one of a growing collection of excellent online units written and tested by teachers that align directly with ON DISK content.

The reassessment of titles has attempted to reflect more accurate linking with NCEA requirements, teacher assessment and the input of a new Advisory Group. The new library is absolutely free (no hireage or postage levy), and when ordering online teachers can expect a package to arrive anywhere in New Zealand within 48 hours.

School Screening Programmes, 2007/2008

Although the new contract between the Film Archive and the Ministry of Education does not specifically include funding for visiting groups, the Film Archive has continued its services for visiting schools. The Archive believes that the school screening function is an essential part of the development of new educational programmes enabling us to both test new material and provide an experience of Film & Television heritage material for New Zealand’s Primary and Secondary school sectors.

Go directly to the Primary & Intermediate School Screening Programmes or to the Secondary School Screening Programmes pages for detail on visiting and outreach screening options, and a listing of available titles.

Tertiary Education

The Film Archive continues to support tertiary education and research. Reference Libraries in Wellington and Auckland are free and open daily. Video Access sites in Whangarei, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Otaki, Christchurch and Dunedin, provide a valuable research resource for senior students.
